On the way to a tobacco- and nicotine-free Switzerland

The Swiss Association for Tobacco Control is the center of competence for tobacco prevention in Switzerland. As an umbrella organization for the promotion of non-smoking, it today comprises over 50 organizational members. AT Switzerland offers its members a broad network of experts and provides expertise on tobacco control and prevention. With evidence-based offers and the networking of the central actors, it is committed to a sustainably healthy and smoke-free Switzerland and at the same time offers the population a hand in quitting smoking and nicotine withdrawal.

An important field of action is the denormalization of the consumption of tobacco and nicotine products. This is because a large part of the population still regards the consumption of lethal tobacco and nicotine products as "normal". Furthermore, the protection of young people is at the center of its work and AT Switzerland would like to encourage smokers on their way to quitting smoking. Finally, AT Switzerland is very concerned to strengthen the protection of the population from passive smoke.

2023 Swiss Women’s Run Bern: AT Switzerland chosen as charity partner

We are very pleased that AT Switzerland has been chosen as a charity partner for this year's Swiss Women's Run, which will take place on 11 June 2023 in Bern! We look forward to working with the Women's Run team to make a positive contribution. Let's come together to get things moving and join the race!

"A race for women, a party for all" is the motto of the Swiss Women's Race Bern, the largest public sporting event for women in Switzerland – with up to 14,000 participants and 30,000 spectators each year. The idyllic route in the heart of Bern, along the Aare, offers five different course lengths.

In Switzerland, 30.6% of women between the ages of 25 and 34 smoke, a figure that hasn’t changed for years. Smoking therefore represents the greatest avoidable health risk: in recent years, we’ve seen a worrying increase in the number of lung and breast cancers in women. AT Switzerland is therefore committed to strengthening structural prevention and smoking cessation in Switzerland. In addition to women with low socio-economic status, our focus is on protecting pregnant women and their babies from passive smoking.

We call on the participants in this year's Swiss Women's Run to contribute in this way to strengthening smoking prevention and women's health, as well as supporting AT Switzerland in its fight against tobacco consumption.

AT Switzerland’s presence at the Women's Race!

AT Switzerland will be present at the race with a creative stand near the Federal Square in Bern’s city center, the start and finish point of the event. We are also organizing groups to run under the banner of AT Switzerland, and registrations for the race will be provided for free. We are in the process of organizing our participation and more news will follow.

Deadline for individual registrations: 28.05.2023

Deadline for school classes and groups: 21.05.2023

AT Blog - Preventing tobacco use in children and adolescents

The primary prevention of tobacco use among children and adolescents is both the cornerstone and the “Achilles heel” of tobacco control policy. For the tobacco industry, this age group is the territory where it can "effortlessly" hunt for new prey. Multinational tobacco companies are thus compensating for a decline in activity due to tobacco-related deaths (8 million per year worldwide) or people who have stopped smoking.

Puff Bars: Delphi fast-track developed by Unisanté

Experts state that disposable electronic cigarettes, often referred to as “puff bars”, should be banned. If a ban is not possible, certain aspects should be strictly regulated: taxation, product composition and marketing, restrictions on sale and consumption. These regulations should go further than the current EU directive and the future Swiss law. The findings will be useful to support and guide policy-making from a public health and environmental perspective.

AT Blog - Electronic Cigarettes and Cardiovascular Risk

Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes have become popular because they are promoted as a "healthier alternative" to smoking. This hypothesis was recently refuted by the FDA.
