National Stop Smoking Program
Organisation
Swiss Cancer League, Swiss Heart Foundation, Swiss Association for Smoking Prevention (AT)
supported by the Tobacco Control Fund
Main goals
The main goals of the National Stop Smoking Program are to motivate and enable health care professionals in stop-smoking counselling. Projects carried out in a health care setting lay the foundation for a broad-based smoking cessation. As a result, smokers interested in quitting can increasingly obtain professional support incorporating the latest scientific findings.
The various campaigns draw smokers' attention to possibilities for obtaining assistance - e.g. the Quit and Win Competition held on the annual World No Tobacco Day - if and when they decide to stop. The National Stop Smoking Program has been in existence since 2001. It is provisionally planned for the programme to continue into 2012.
The projects
To date four projects have been established, and two more are being developed, in a health care setting. These are projects aimed at particular target groups, e.g. doctors, dental practices, pharmacies, hospitals, medical practices specialized in diabetes or cardiovascular disease, and professionals other than doctors dealing with cardiovascular patients.
